When is the best time to dig up Iris bulbs to dry them for replanting?

Found this info on line. My mom had beds of iris and living in East Tennessee, we never dug our iris, but my aunt did and this is what she did each year.

The iris flower bulbs should be dug from the bed just before the first frosts and then left to dry for a few days in a frost free location. Once the bulbs are dry, any remaining leaves and excess soil can be removed and they are then ready to be taken to their winter storage quarters. Most tender bulbs need to be stored in a cool, dry and dark place for the winter. Some will benefit from being stored in peat, sand or even shredded paper.

Unless there is a overcrowding or your area is in danger of frost do not dig them up.

ok so it will be best to wait until early fall for transplanting.

I never let my iris bulbs dry out... I just dig them up in September and replant...after cutting some of the foliage off.

Dig Iris bulbs in late August or early September and move to the new location. Easy Peasy. They need sun to bloom.
