Is it true you can use newspaper around plants to avoid weeds?

i have been told you can use newspaper around your plants to avoid weeds.
Seems weird to me.

    I use it instead of that landscape cloth , which I hate. It helps some .

    I found the weeds still came thru but were easier to pull out than with landscape cloth which the weeds also grew thru.

    It works! Newspaper composts so you'll need to renew it, but it does work.

    Yes, but if you really want to keep weeds out use card board boxes and mulch on top.

    I agree with the cardboard box Robin. It's worked great for me. I also cover my gardens through the winter with cardboard and black plastic. It helps things warm up more quickly in the spring. (-30 to -60 C) I've noticed I seem to be weeding less in the summer.

    We use 2 or 3 layers works great and we use rocks or dirt clods to hold it in place.
