Rototiller is a good idea if you have hard dirt but you could just buy the roll grass and roll it out and water it everyday for 30 day's and instant grass
For seeding a lawn ,aeration should be done.Next step is applying top soil, grass seed, starter fertilizer, and top with peat mass. Keep the seed moist at all times until it germinates.
We just had to replace a spot in our yard and we used tge Rototiller pulled all the yucky grass and dirt or lack of dirt. We then used a bag of Lawn soil and put it down then put sod down and walked across it to get it worked into the new soil. Then we made sure it was watered well a few times a day and it has taken off!! I will try to get pictures after this storm passes! Good luck!
All I do is throw the seed on top of bare dirt, then scratch it in with a garden rake. Cover with straw and water down generously, after 5 to 7 days pull straw away! Yes it is as easy as that.......
A friend of mine wanted to seed his yard. Someone told him to just throw the seed on the ground and it would germinate. He very diligently followed the instructions that his friend told him. Well, you guessed it, the birds had a wonderful buffet for a long time and he had a lot of bird friends.
Grew new patches of grass my just throwing the seed to the ground and cover it with lime.
You can just throw down seed but if you till it first it will do better
Here are a few pictures.
