Any garden soil mixture will work but I like miracle grow
Also plant 1-2 basil plants in each pot with your tomatoes. They are a great companion plant, and then you will have fresh basil to make wonderful recipes when your tomatoes are ripe!
I use about 50/50 potting soil and peat moss. Make sure that you use the potting soil with extended release fertilizer or put extended release fertilizer for tomatoes and vegetables after you plant the tomato. Make sure your pot is big enough for the mature size of the tomato plant and cage or stake it for support. Enjoy your tomato's!
depends on how many plants you plan to grow......tomato plants do best in a min. of 5 gal.soil mix. if you are doing 1 or 2 miracle grow. if you are doing 124.....well...you are better off blending your own grow medium. there are soil mix recipes on the net. one of the gardeners on this site gave me a soil mix recipe -I've been using it, has equal parts peat and perlite, compost and top soil.
i dump all 4 plus extended release fertilizer on a tarp and roll/fold it like a cake batter until all is mixed. It helps that i live 20 min from an agriculture supply store. my seeds got started in this mix, sans fertilizer. 10 yr old seed....put 2 seeds per cell. every seed sprouted.
60 or so tomatoes are going to an adopt a tomato plant program for the Dubuque Ia. food pantry. they are moving out on the 18th, along with the 5 gal. soil filled grow bags. wish us luck!
