What about a planter on the sunniest side with a trellis in it for vines to climb. This way you get shade along with blooms.
A small potted tree that is tall would work...like an apple tree. OR if you own the building where this balcony is...Mount a board the length of the balcony & attach a roller-type awning to it; then pull it down & attach it to swivel type fastners at each end to hold the awning in place.
Swing with canopy if you have room.
