There's a thing called a fire ring that's available through hardware businesses (I.e. Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, etc-in my area they're even available at a mini-mart!!). The ring is a galvanized metal. You dig a hole and se the ring inside. You can finish offthefire pit by adding concrete or stones, setting them around the perimeter of the ring.

SORRY...I just HAVE TO SHARE THIS...so funny!!! A friend recently shared a picture of a fire pit for BBQing & chilling your favorite beverages...someone re-USED a TOILET...yes...a toilet, the tank serves as a beverage cooler with ice in it & ...yes, you guessed it...the toilet bowl served as the fire pit!!! they just placed a metal refrigerator type screen over the top of the toilet bowl. NOW...when the cooking is done...you 'flush the toilet' & the water from the melted ice in the tank puts out the fire!!!
