I have the best luck growing the looser leaf types of lettuce in containers such as Romaine.

Black seeded Simpson works well and tastes great.
depending on the size of the container if you have a half barrel you could easily grow 4 heads of Iceberg along with some leafy lettuce or spinach also Swiss chard
Black Seeded Simpson - I've been growing it in a large pot for a few years now. It tastes great. Each year before I plant the new crop there's always some that came back from last year's planting. Happy gardening!

depends on what you want to eat and size of the container....any lettuce will grow in a container if it has the room for it's mature size....i recommend leafy varieties...also spinach does excellent in containers, arugula, romaine...but in smaller containers I grow bean sprouts....just a suggestion--i took a childs wagon, drilled drain holes, and now I have a portable herb garden that can be moved according to the weather conditions...for severe storms I move it into the garage till the storm passes
