I have clay like dirt in my yard, what is the best thing to do to it?

I buy some top soil and Miracle grow dirt to help it, but I have to do this every spring. I'm in the Midwest. Any other suggestions?

You need to amend the soil and loosen it up. You need to add peat moss, compost , sand and mix it into the clay. You can dig it in with a shovel ot rent a tiller from Home Depot.

I have nothing but clay. I turnover the soil every spring and fall and add compost. I've even done compost pits in the soil over the winter. My soil still has lots of clay, but it is soft and I grow whatever I want. when I want to start a new garden bed I lay down several layers of cardboard and apply compost over the cardboard. Usually I do this toward the end of fall. By spring, I have soft soil that I dig up and turnover.
