Make sure there are drainage holes, fill the can with soil, plant and water.
You could paint it if you do not want it to look like a trash can. Fill most of it with leaves so you will use less soil. This will prevent too much drainage and make it lighter if you need to move it.
Use good soil and water once a week or so it should do fine
I grow a lot of potted plants. As others have noted, there should be good drainage. I put large rocks in the bottom of my pots so that there is a continuous supply of moisture. Use a misture of good garden soil and manureto fill the can. Plant your tomatoes and water. Water when the soil is dry, but be careful not to over water, this will cause tha plants to rot.
If you put leaves in the bottom they will get pressed down and your soil and plant will go down too. You can mix them in the soil to degrade and continue to feed your plants. If you need to lighten the can use plastic soda bottles. Just don't use so many that there isn't enough soil for the roots to grow and spread out sufficiently.
