Either one is fine if you have time to start them from seeds. Personally I buy them at the garden center that way
Startin from seedscan be difficult unless you have a "greenhouse"type area for them to grow in. I prefer to buy the plants at the Garden Center. One of the most important things is to choose a good brand. Checkout the nursery the plants came from for an advantage in the growth process.
I'm a cheapskate.....I start my plants by seed. My basement has over 100 tomato seedlings in it. One of the master gardeners from this site was most helpful. Now.....getting them properly potted is the chalange. I have grow medium in 60 grow bags. These are going out to patrons of the dubuque food pantrys.
I direct sow my tomato seeds. I find that, for me, starting from seed I get a hardier plant. For whatever reason the seedlings I buy from the store I have to constantly treat them for fungus.
