How can I re-paint my steel 6 panel front door with a window?

How do I do this? Take it off its hinges? Lay flat? What about chemical paint strip beforehand? What are the steps for a clean, fresh re-paint? Roll, brush, spray?

It definitely makes the paint job easier to remove the door first, and have it laying flat while painting.

we found it easier to tape a sheet of paper over the glass and remove the hardware

Leave it up! Take off hardware, tape off glass, run a putty knife along the tape (important step to prevent paint seepage) lightly sand, prime, paint....

Remove the paint first. Sand any areas where the paint wouldn't come off. Wash the door with RSP and rinse well. Roll on a good primer on the flat areas and a brush in the recessed areas. Do the same when painting it. let dry and apply second coat.
