Something you could do is take out the glass center, and cut a piece of plywood to fit down into the top not sit on top of the table. That would give you a tiny bit of depth to complete a mosaic tile top. Get some colorful tiles and break up into different size pieces lay them out the way you want and create!
Do you want to paint it ,stain in a different color or try to give it a totally new look?
Chalk paint and distress it but use polyacrylic instead of wax so it is safer for use with drinks, food and such. The distressed look in a beige would look awesome with your rug or you could pick a brighter color if you want a real pop! OR, the super hot thing right now is a white bottom and a dark wood top. It would cover the glass area but no more worries about pets, kids or anything when it comes to the glass or drinks, food, just anything! Here is a link to a picture that can give you a visual only, doesn't have any how to's but pretty sure you can google that and find a zillion options of what to do! https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/86/f8/8b/86f88b76c56f02a7c5666bd917a1625d.jpg
Take the glass off and flip it over. Attach a piece of painted or (maybe use contact paper ) plywood and tack to the bottom. Flip it over and you can put mementos or photos or game pieces, what ever you want to display. Put the glass back and voila! A whole new look.
I would paint the top one colour that goes well with your decor, let the paint dry, then find a piece of lace that will fit the top, tape it down along the edges (on the side, not top of the table), and spray paint another colour that will go with your decor over the lace. When the paint is dry, remove the lace. - Put a layer of matte or gloss sealer over it .. you will have a unique table!
Please show us your finished table, when it's done! I can't wait to seeeeee! :)
Cut a piece of plywood that is the shape of the glass on top of your table. Cut the piece to fit down into the square space so you have a little bit of room to add your tiles or stones.
or cover with marbled look contact paper or wall paper and seal with spray on lacquer or sponge brush on varnish...makes one think you have a marble table
If your table just needs to be spruced up, you might try my favorite method and the one I usually start with for wood furniture or cabinets: Minwax Wood Finish. I've used it for many years with very good results, plus it is inexpensive and easy to apply and comes in many wood tones. If you don't get the look you want you can always try something else.
Would love to see your table once you have it the way you like!
The easiest thing to do would be give it a deeper wood look with gel-stain like a mahogany or cherry finish would pick up the reds in your carpet.
Then if you like to put your feet up.... upholster the top with a piece of foam and some durable fabric or vinyl on top of a piece of plywood the same size as the glass.
You could also get stain glass paint, and paint the back of the glass with a unique design. You could apply mirror paint on the back of the glass or do a mercury glass look. Krylone or Rustoleum spray has those.
You could also cut a piece of tin ceiling tile for a more country look to replace the glass on top of a thin piece of plywood.
