I hear that the deer don't like ivory soap , maybe take a few bars and tie then to a stick , push the stick into the dirt around your hosta. I haven't tried it myself but this comes from an elderly friend of mine . Won't hurt to try ?
Also try making a spray with hot pepper and crushed garlic.
Just sprinkle hot pepper around the plants, it will keep the little darlings away.
Hosta is kinda like putting out a salad bar... Big, soft, tasty leaves. Deer fencing or spray (I've been having good luck with Liquid Fence) are your options. Since deer follow a repeated track, over time you might be able to draw them to a different part of your garden with tasties you want them to eat instead, such as daylilies, roses. Good luck!
I seen one time where this woman put old CD's in the garden on a stick, she said it keeps the deer away. They also don't like Irish Spring soap on a stick, the smell I guess.
