What can I do to update white ceramic tile?

The folks who built this house in 1990 LOVED shiny white ceramic tile. It is on the kitchen counter tops and backsplash, all 3 bathroom counter tops, and in all 3 bathroom showers. Because of the grout and the fact it isn't flat, I don't see how I can put anything over these surfaces. We are having to replace our roof due to a recent hailstorm and don't have the funds for replacing these lovely white tiles. Help!!

They make some pretty cool and realistic-looking tile stickers that you can just stick over the ugly ones!
