citronella plant
Landscape Plants; Basil, Bee Balm, Cadaga Tree, Cedars, Cloves, Floss Flower, Garlic, Lavander, Lemon Grass, Citronella Grass, Lemon Scented Geranium, Lemon Verbena, Mexican Marigold, Eucalyptus, Nodding Onion, Mint, Wormwood, Rosemary, and best of all if you have standing water fish.
It is impossible to eliminate them, just deter them. I use citronella geraniums and the electric bug zappers you hang from your eaves. The mostly look like lanterns and I saw one in a Bed Bath and Beyond brochure that even has some kind of vacuum to pull in bugs.
Recipe for a yard spray: 1 big bottle of cheap blue mouthwash, 3 cups of Epsom salts, 3 stale 12 oz. beers. Mix together until Epsom salts is dissolved. Spray anywhere you sit outside twice during the summer. The mosquitos leave the area and won't come back. Will not harm plants or flowers.
We use a combination of things. Lots of citronella and lemongrass plants around the yard...as well as lavender and rosemary. I also make a spray from 1/8 cup lemongrass oil and 1 gallon water to spray around the yard (and on yourself if desired) to help keep them away. We have a small pond near our backyard, and this seems to do the trick for us!
Hang fabric softener sheets around area.
