Whats the best way to level a concrete basement floor?

Hi, I was just wondering what would be the best way to level a concrete basement floor.It is very uneven. Example: our pool table has books about 1 1/2 inches thick on one side just to level table. Its quite a large area..do you think we could use regular concrete as opposed to self leveling as this would be so expensive..Has anyone done this?

New concrete will not adhere to old concrete. Self leveling concrete is polymer modified to adhere to old concrete. That is why the cost is up there.
