Starw bales. They need to be conditioned before planting and changed every year, but are weedless and can grow almost anything.

You could use containers for your upstairs garden and ground garden. You could use a pallet by putting weed barrier cloth and/or cardboard on the back of the pallet then add soil and plants. You could also build a 4'x4' frame out of 2'x6's or cinder blocks lay down an inexpensive plastic tarp or cardboard then mix your soil consisting of 4 cu ft of peat moss, 4 cu ft of vermiculite and 5 different kinds of natural compost from Home Depot, Walmart or any other source and fill up your 4 x4 garden area with the components listed above mixed well. This soil can be used for any other containers.
