Hostas..dumb auto-correct..lol
I have had great luck with hostas, ferns, tiarella, bleeding heart (dicentra spectabilis), columbine, Solomon's seal, fern leaf bleeding heart (dicentra eximia), astilbes, heuchera, wood aster, kiringeshoma palmata, the ground covers lamium which have pink or purple flowers blooming now and sweet woodruff; as well as rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel, kerria, hydrangea "Blue Billow," oak leaf hydrangea, and pieris shrubs. Then there are spring blooming bulbs which bloom before trees leaf out (daffodils, spanish bells, aconite, squill, crocus). There is a wealth of information at gardening websites, and also don't neglect looking at mail order garden websites and enter your requirement of shade plants to see what is available.
