Using broken concrete instead of flagstone as patio surface

Doerr Landscape Design on Jan 19, 2014I have done this in the past and it is very easy to do . I suggest using sand to level the old pieces of cement , I planted in between with a ground cover in one case and used a small beach pebble ( called Jelly beans ) in another .Helpful Reply

Elaine51 on Jan 19, 2014a long time ago we broke up a cement patio that was cracking and I used the pieces to build a planter curving around the backyard. it was easy with some mortar and level. my husband thought I was crazy! but went along with it. lol.....the buyers later said that sold them on the backyard..........they stay never move and are stable just use a level.......saved us a bunch of money having it hauled off at the time. we were broke and young..lol.....Helpful Reply

Patty on Jan 19, 2014It is easy if you use sand as your base and make sure it is level. Before I put my sand down, I placed the pieces where I wanted them, then I used chalk and numbered the rock then took pictures just to make sure I liked it. Then after I picked up the concrete pieces I poured the sand in and placed the concrete pieces. I then sprinkled Polymer sand in between in all the spaces, tapped it down real good then sprinkled with water so the polymer would harden. ( I did this to keep it from shifting and give it a nice clean look and help keep weeds out) Then I bought some sample size concrete stain and used a rag to apply just a little bit of stain here and there to give it the look of flagstone, very easy and very pretty.Helpful Reply

Patty on Jan 20, 2014The stain last forever. I don't have pictures, because we moved cross country and any pictures I have of the back yard my beautiful little private patio is hidden by trees shrubs and flowers. I want to do it again and hopefully I can this summer. I failed to tell you that after I rubbed a little stain in here and there I took a small artist brush and put veining in just like flagstone has and I used three different colors of stain. You can buy concrete stain almost anywhere, just make sure you buy stain and not paint.Helpful Reply

Patty on Jan 20, 2014The stain last forever, that is why I used a rag to apply it, better control and you can apply it heavy or light, (ware rubber gloves) I used a small artist brush to put veining in, and I used three different colors of stain. I don't have pictures because we moved cross country and any pictures of the back yard my beautiful little private patio is hidden by trees, shrubs and flowers. I'm hoping to do another one this summer.Helpful Reply

Joan on Feb 04, 2015I am needing to complete/replace a sidewalk in front of my house in the next few months. I have red/gray paver steps completed already that I hired a contractor to do but I want to do the sidewalk myself but at a less cost. I absolutely love the idea of the broken cement with the stain!!! I would love to see a completed project .....Helpful Reply
