How do you get pet odors out of the subflooring under a carpet pad? The carpet and pad have been removed.

House 2 Home Designs on May 22, 2011The best way, we've found to get pet orders out of wood or cement subflooring is to use a paint sealer called "Kilz". It usually takes 2 coats to seal a cement floor. A wood floor may require you to remove and replace some of the sub floor, especially if it has warped due to the urine, once the damaged wood has been replaced then coat the entire floor with the Kilz. The worst case of pet damaged subfloor we have experienced took 3 coats of the oil based Kilz to finally seal it. Besure to apply a thick coating and seal along the wall/floor edges.Helpful Reply

Level One Construction Co., LLC on May 22, 2011Pet urine will penetrate uerethane finishes and will certainly discolor. If it's hardwoods and its stained, refinishing of the area will work if not too deep. Beyond that it's a "tooth-in" repair situation. House 2 Home covered the rest of the scenarios.Helpful Reply

Sally K on May 22, 2011Bleach & vinegar is the cheapest way to kill the odor. It may take a couple of applications but it is pennies to the dollar. The next best way is use Kilz. If you plan on re-carpeting your floor afterwards and still have the pets, be sure to buy the pad with the anti-microbial in it. It keeps the bacteria of the urine from growing which causes the smell. Hope this helps.Helpful Reply
