Doreen,
Yes, you can do that! Go here: https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?rs=ac&len=2&q=staining%20concrete%20patio&eq=staining%20concret&etslf=9825&term_meta[]=staining%7Cautocomplete%7Cundefined&term_meta[]=concrete%7Cautocomplete%7Cundefined&term_meta[]=patio%7Cautocomplete%7Cundefined
You can stain concrete but not sure if it will cover up rust stains. You can also get the concrete re-surfaced like a pool deck. They can do all kinds of finishes.
To cover the rust stains you'll need a paint. Stain is transparent and will let the rust show through.
Use epoxy overlay, available at Lowe's or Menards, Home Depot
You'd have to stain it the same color as the rust stains as they will show through. Perhaps, you can try to get rid of the stain using muriatic acid.
Do you have lemons? And salt? You'll need a few, but it worked great on my patio!
Cut the lemons in half, apply a coating of salt on the rust spot and rub it with the lemon.
You only need a little elbow grease, but you will see a difference. A couple of spots needed to be done more than once. I hope you get a chance to try it cause it sure is cheaper and a lot less labor intensive.
Have you tried pressure washing or bleach?
