Oxyclean works well too. I use a combination of them both. If you can let the washer fill up and then let the whites soak for a few hours. Then start the machine.
Probably you have a front load washer. Which means it's partly an accumulation of detergent because there's not enough water to rinse it out. My service guy said to never use more than 3 Tablespoons of detergent, even the really good stuff. Use white vinegar for your softener. One of the problems, too, is that a lot of the "cotton" toweling and sheets say you cannot bleach or they will discolor. Cotton?!? Yup. Tshirt cotton and socks can safely be bleached. But remember the 2-3 tablespoon rule.
All I can suggest is soaking in Oxy or non-chlorine bleach, then run thru rinse cycle and hang in the sun.
If you are talking about chlorine that you use in the pool-pretty rough on your clothes. Why don't you try a pre soak with some Clorox or you could try some liquid dishwashing detergent. It used to do wonders on my son's white baseball pants
Along with bleach get Mrs. Stewart blueing agent. Works great to bring the bright back to white.
If they are polyester, they do go off white and some things can never be retrieved sadly
You can soak most washable whites in a solution of hot water, 1/2 cup chlorine bleach, and a half cup dishwasher detergent. Fill a bucket as full as you need (depending on amt. of clothing) and add the other ingredients. Push the fabric down into the solution and soak overnight. Wash as usual the next day and the whites should be snowy again.
Bleach tends to make whites yellow and dingy. I add hydrogen peroxide when I wash my whites.
