re-pot them in the next size u with fresh potting soil and liberally spray them down with horticultural oil
Every other day I dunk my Boston ferns in a 5 gallon bucket of water with 1 cup of epson salts mixed in to it. I hold them under the water until all the bubbles are gone. The ferns stay lush all summer with no bugs. If it is a year to split them I like to do it before the weather turns so they can re-establish themselves a little before the short days of winter.
Spray them with equal parts dish detergent and water before bringing them in.
I usually hosed them down thoroughly before bringing inside and stopped because of bugs.
I live in NE PA and mine could be split now. When I split them I do it with complete ignorance. I take them out of the pots and use a long serrated knife and cut/saw them into quarters. I replant them 2 quarters to a (hanging size) pot and fill with organtic potting soil. After this I don't dunk them, but I water them with the same mixture. Good luck.
