Here's an ingenious idea for solar pool heating that uses hula-hoops and no electricity. Take a few hula-hoops, attach polyethylene film and then toss them into the pool to catch sun rays and heat the water. These hula-hoop heaters look like lily pads floating on top of the water. Easy to remove when needed.Apr 3, 2016

you would be mostly off meter.....but cost out the panels. then the batteries needed to store the energy.

have fun with the batteries for your pump. it has taken up to 48 hours for my camper batteries to recharge in full sun light. and that just keeps the camper lights on, not the ac. won't keep the crock pot powered either. thats 3 4 ft panels in full sun.
stick with electric. it has taken up to 48-72 hours to charge the camper batteries for use. thats just to keep the lights on and the crock pot warm.
are the panels for solar worth it? not at this point. it takes 3 2 ft wide 4 ft tall solar panels just to run 2 light bulbs in my camper. not the hot plate, not the crock pot. not the fan. yup the battery is a good one....
If you use it to heat your pool, that is worth it. Tap into your return line and use pvc pipe. Build a box using pressure-treated wood and paint the inside black. Run the pipe back and forth in the box and paint the pipe black and run it out to the return to the pool. Install a sheet of plexiglass so that the box acts like a greenhouse. This will cut back on the energy that you use on the heater. If you like, you can use valves to direct the water into a bypass pipe so that if it gets too warm you can bypass the solar heater. If you have room build the box to the size of a full sheet of plywood.
