Hi Clare, we picked up a dresser at dump ( they had a shack, u could take or leave things) . I went to Lowe's and got paint close to original color for about $12 +tax, had a knob missing orig. was 6 now 4, filled with wood filler (paintable /stainable type), I t looks good! Did not remove old paint or stain, Know you can do it! EZ good luck
You can remove the old paint using a chemical stripper like Citri-Strip. Just apply the stripper, let sit about 30 minutes, and scrape off the old paint, working with the grain. You can use an abrasive pad with mineral spirits or Citri-Strip After Wash to remove any leftover spots, then wipe down with a soft cloth moistened with After Wash. Allow to dry completely, then apply new paint or stain.
If you like a vintage style, you might consider chalk paint. You can buy chalk paint or make it yourself for much cheaper price. We like our recipe of 1/3 cup water mix with 1/3 cup plaster of paris. When it is mixed add 1 cup latex paint. This will cover a dresser with 6 drawers. Good luck!
I will give your suggestion a try. Thank you.
There are some good gel paint strippers that are non-toxic and easy to use.
