There comes a time when something that has been used daily is just plain worn out. Sounds like the shelf life of your carpet has long expired.
If it is too worn out to even be cleaned, then it is time to have it removed. What surface is under the carpet? It is a good enough surface that is liveable?
If you can not afford to buy a new (I am assuming that it is wall-to-wall carpet) then perhaps you could budget for a smaller size area carpet to be put in the part of the living room that would make it most comfortable?
You could try having it steam cleaned.
Do you have a nice floor underneath? Maybe you should just get rid of it while the weather is warm enought to consider moving it out of the house. Maybe a section of the carpeting could be saved ? (but that is an expense as well to have it bound).
A professional cleaning can do wonders. You can also talk to them about carpet dying.

Area rugs?
Might be a bad idea but you could cut out pieces and insert wood or tile. You will also need transition strips. Depends on where the wear is.
We had scraps from our carpet that we’d saved when it was originally installed, cut out the stained areas, used carpet tape to hold in the patches.
Watch out for nap/grain. Run your hand over the existing carpet and the patching carpet. Observe which way the fibers lay down or stand up. Put arrows on the back.
Also our fiber was fairly long. We found taping it out of the way with packing tape made a better-looking patch.
Yes I would rip up a corner and see what's underneath sometimes there are perfectly good hardwoods underneath. Carpet is pretty much done after 10 years. You could clean it, and put a very large area carpet over it You can buy reasonably priced area carpets at St. Vincent de Paul thrift store, on Wayfair, Overstocked.com, and look for sales online.
