I find it difficult to fasten something to the wall, or hang something on the wall it is not in line with a stud. The thin plaster walls do not hold. Ant ideas?
Perhaps you could use a strong magnet to find the nails. I believe that is kind of the way a stud finder works. I am using my brain from years ago(I'm aging myself again!) from what my dad told me when I was a kid when I was helping him hang something heavy on his cabin wall.
Magnet sounds pretty clever! Here's a couple other ideas: (1) Outlets are always attached to the left/right of a stud so you could go from there. Normally studs are consistently every 12-18". (2) if it is quiet I've known my husband to tap with his fist/knuckles every few inches and listen for the change in noise. It would sound solid where the studs were and more hollow were there wasn't any. Hope this helps a little.
Try tapping on wall with a hammer and listen for the change in sound.
Easy! Here are a couple links for you!

There are usually studs on the side of an electrical outlet. From there, measure out 16". Hopefully you have measured from the correct side of the outlet!
