packing peanuts
I agree with Susan. Put in a 1/3 to 1/2 layer of packing peanuts in the container. Soda cans or plastic bottles with landscape fabric on top. Then put in your soil.
I agree about soda cans or other light things that will fill in the space that's not necessarily needed for the soil. Best of luck to you.
definitely try packing peanuts or even the bubble wrap that comes in packaging
I put empty water bottles or peanuts at the bottom of my bigger pots.
Hi Donna! I used several very large pots in my yard and I have used a couple of things to lighten them up. First of all, I use those shipping peanuts mixed in with a couple medium sized rocks in the bottom when planting for drainage. I found that you need something with the peanuts to allow for drainage - you could even use some of those little glass stones with the peanuts. I also use some soil moist pellets mixed in with the planting soil to keep the soil loose for the roots. The soil moist is good when you water because it helps to hold the moisture for an extra day when it is really hot.
I hope this helps!
I always use empty pop cans or torn up styrofom cups
Chunks of styrofoam. I used an old foam cooler that I broke up into pieces. Took about 2/3 of the space. But know what you are putting in it. Nothing edible and some plants need more root space than others.
Crushed aluminum cans
Soda bottles with air in them. You need to watch how much soil you replace or you may not have enough room for good root growth.
Dirt, or soil?
water bottles in the bottom ,cover with landscape material and add the soil.Worked for me
I should have been more specific it is for edibles that I am looking for suggestions to put in the pots and containers, thank you so much for your answer however as I also have other plants that grow large and can use the styrofoam for them.
No problem with veggies.
thank you to all who responded with their great ideas! I shall start tomorrow!
