No rules that I know of. Just a bright color that will draw attention to the front door.
Are you getting your house ready to sell, or just planning to live in it yourself? If you're putting it on the market, it's not a bad idea to have the exterior reflect the interior. This doesn't mean the door color needs to match any of your interior paint exactly, but just that it should fit in with the rest of your home. If the inside of your house is bold, sleek and modern, don't paint the door a shabby chic pastel, and vice-versa.
Now, if you're not planning to sell your home any time soon, paint it any color you like that isn't going to drive the neighbors crazy. Most people aren't going to see the inside of your house anyway.
No, the color does not need to carry over in to your house. But it really should look good with what's going on the outside of your house. I love a red door. But you should pick a color that coordinates with the color of your house. Good luck.
No rules! Paint it any color you wish that appeals to you. I would just have it either coordinate or compliment the color on the body of the house or any trim. Another option is to have it pop by using a different color completely. Then to make it look great, get a few accessories like pots for the porch in the same color. I repeat things in odd numbers for interest or even numbers for a traditional balanced appearance.
The color can be anything. It doesn't need to carry to the inside of the house nor does it need to coordinate with the outside. You can use the door as it's own focal point and paint it a great accent color. Have fun!
The outside door doe NOT have to carry into the house! You can either paint it to match the existing outside colors or go the opposite and paint it a color that contrasts. For example, if you have a gray house, you can match it with another shade of gray or something in the same color (cool color ) family, like pale gray or smokey gray. For contrast, pick a warm color like burnt orange or a deep gold. I would take a photo of the house and put paint sample swatches against it until you see a combination you like.
