I don't think that is something that a lay person should do by themselves. I would get a pro to do it. For sure you need to solder water pipes together very carefully to prevent leaks. Most people can not do the job a pro can.

Water pipes can be easy to move if you use pex. Heat ducts can be very difficult depending on structural and/or aesthetic issues. A professional is always best to be sure.

Hello Trish, It's a pretty big deal to move duct work and water pipes. I recommend leaving this job to a pro, but be sure to get a couple bids first. Also try using a site like Angie's List or Home Advisers to find a pro. That way you get to see what other people thought of their work.
  • Can be easy to difficult - just depends on how much needs to be rerouted to meet building codes. Most of the cost is in labor, watch those guys work, do you want to do that job? The rest is cost of materials. Just remember, it is all for your comfort and safety of your family.

It is duct work not duck work and you need to hire professionals

Now, now, let's not get too picky, auto correct does not always pick the right word, and not everyone knows how to spell every word. I use spell check and still can end up with a misspelled word because I haven't caught something auto correct screwed up. Be nice to those of us who don't spell every word right or have the dictionary memorized!

My husband was a licensed residential contractor and he subbed this work out. Nancy is right, get a licensed professional. Water pipes and ductwork need to be done correctly; otherwise, it only gets more expensive to undo the mistakes.

Duct work is sized to match the air flow needed from the unit to the rooms. Any deviation can cause hot and cold rooms due to improper air flow. Removing and rerouting would need the expertise of a professional. Removing water pipes is easy. The challenge is rerouting so not to limit the water pressure at the fixtures and some codes have certain requirements. Also best for an expert.
