Why not dye the fabric using Rite dye? https://www.ritdye.com/2016/03/28/how-to-dye-an-upholstered-chair-with-rit/ I would go for a chocolate brown or deep charcole gray.
You are brave! But I would do the same before considering an expensive reupholstering. Obviously, remove he cushion and test the paint on a really small section that won't show once the cushion is back in place. I would go with a dark color...looks like black would work with your decor. Here is a link (I've taken their advice before and it has always had good results) I feel like the second paint review is perfect for you. AND the blogger used black to paint a cloth ottoman! so you can see how it looks. Good luck! Post a pic when you're done!

I tried to paint my armchair and it was a diasaster...the dyed route is ok but consider recovering these yourself...if you go slow it is absolutely possible. Check out my projects page for my drab to fab chair makeover. I used a painters drop cloth to recover an old drab chair...it took a while but it was totally worth it.
Rather than paint, how about a fabric dye? Slowly and carefully and try on a hidden spot is the way to go.
Many years ago I had an aqua colored couch which faded in the sun so I dyed it and it came out really well. I would not recommend any paint as it may have a tendency to crack over time and then you would have a real mess and then not able to reupholster either.
I saw on a show last Sunday that a woman used a stencil type brush with a large head, and used chalk paint to paint a chair. She blotted it on, making sure to get down into the material, blotted off the excess and let it dry. It looked like she had to do several coats to get an even coverage, but it looked really good
