What to plant in an area that is either in deep shade or intense sun?

I have a long narrow flowerbed that runs between a patio and the wall of the house. The patio has a western exposure. The flowerbed is like the two sides of the moon...either in intense heat & light, or in deep shade. I live in Southern California but at a 5,500 ft. elevation where we get the four seasons.
