Hi, this is what I was taught. Roses have 3 leaf and 5 leaf. Cut at the five-leaf and you will get more flowers all the time. To cut the main growth, do that also at a 5 leaf one that will also produce a new branch. Good luck hope this helps
Valentines day is the best time to prune roses in the South. ( Texas ) Cut out all the dead wood and branches., reshape if needed.
My daughter lives in the Dallas area where winters are colder but we trimmed hers back a little late but her bush was beautiful in Spring
