you can use Citristrip which is a non toxic product
or you can sand the finish off. Rember to use a mask over your face and mouth,
Sand it off or try Citristrip.
A heat gun softens the surface and allows you to scrape. Then you'll have to sand. When sanding, wear a dust mask.

i used a stripper and power washed my dresser worked great
Without chemicals, the best option would be using a sander. Wear a dust mask and start with course paper to remove the majority of varnish and then move to a finer paper to smooth.
