Early spring is the best. You need to at least scrape the top of the soil an inch or so down, then sprinkle on grass seed, and keep it covered with a light layer of straw or clean grass clippings to keep the seed from blowing away. Keep it moist, water daily--not too heavily or it will wash away. After a few days, the light green seedlings will come up. Don't mow it until it's well established, 5 or 6 ".
Where do you live?
Spring and Fall are both good times to plant . The weather has cooled and the little seedlings like that. You do need to have adequate time before snow or ground freezing for it to establish. The earlier in the fall the better. I got this off Scott's website. "The answer depends on the type of grass you're planting. Cool-season grasses grow best when temperatures are between 60-80 degrees. Early fall is the best time to seed because of its shorter days, cooler nights, and heavier dews. Your most successful seeding time is right around Labor Day. " While straw will work grass clippings might be too heavy and smother the seedlings. I usually use a very light cover of mushroom compost as a top dressing. Major box stores carr
Most of the lawn care companies like tru green will over seed the lawns in the fall. I have never seen them cover the lawns with anything like straw.
Fall is the best time for sure. That way the roots have a chance to get established before the hot weather comes along.
Tru Green just seeded our lawn last week and they had recommended doing it in Sept. because of the cooler weather coming. They did cover any areas that were bare with straw to keep the seed down
Yes, early Fall is the best time to seed grass, so the seeds dig- in (grabs hold) before the snow falls. The seed has time to germinmate and be ready for a warm Spring. Some mild winters, we have seen the new grass under a fine layer of snow! Amazing! Straw does add a layer for warm bedding and we have a tighter lawn when using straw but not necessary as grass is tough. We also seed in the early Spring when the ground is warm. Happy Lawn!
