There are a couple of ways. You can dig a wide trench around your hostas, just about an inch deep, and then fill it will some coarse sand. I like this one because I can buy the sand at the local aquarium store. My friend suggested that construction sand that is used to make concrete is more affordable but I can't lift those big bags. Also very fine pebbles don't work as well. The sand sticks to the foot of snails and slugs so they avoid it. I've also used crushed chicken egg shells or crushed mussel shells. I like the crushed mussel shells the best but they are work intensive. They have to be cleaned before you smack them with a hammer. But if you have children, or pets, or if you like to putter around in the garden they are not idea because the edges are sharp. (I liked them because it kept the neighbors cats from using my vegetable garden as their litter box. You will need a lot because whatever you do use you will have to extend it about 4-6 inches beyond your hostas' leaf tips.
Get rid of the slugs by pouring beer in a plastic lid about 4 inch diameter and putting these around the plant beds. They will crawl in the plastic lid and never crawl out.
Use sand around the base. Slugs don't like sand.
