depends on your paint pallet ... we used a really light blue with a touch of grey (it is called November sky) through out the house... and it goes with all of the other wall colors, cream, grey, even the chocolate brown in the kitchen

use a sand color for the walls and ceiling to get the light play of shadows as the light travels thru the rooms.
For me, it depends on the height of the ceiling. Our vaulted ceiling is a medium gray and it makes to room feel cozier. I wouldn't necessarily do that in a smaller, regular height room. BUT I have seem some fantastic brightly painted ceilings, like purple or green and it can look so nice.
you can paint ceiling the same as the walls. When you go too dark on a ceiling it lowers it.
