Check YouTube for quilt ideas and search the Internet for quilt companies and quilt patterns. You might particularly check out Missouri Star Quilt Company. Their video tutorials show shortcuts to speed up the work and you'll find many ideas there. Use crayons and graph paper to sketch an experimental block. What about making blocks in red and white and then putting a black sashing (strip of fabric) between the blocks? I'd avoid appliques.

You can find basic block square patterns online. Also, any chance your granddaughter has some tee-shirts or some of her older clothing you can add into the quilt? You would get some extra hugs I am sure.
I'd suggest getting a book for quilting, it may be your best option!
