What you hear does not agree with what I am reading. I selected outdoor flood light fixtures from four different manufacturers on homedepot.com. These were all inexpensive fixtures under $50. Every one was compatible with outdoor rated LED bulbs. As for the reviews, read individual reviews and see if there is a pattern. Sometimes folks expect a $30 fixture to perform and have the durability of a $200 fixture. It shouldn't. I've had one of those $12.95 mostly plastic fixtures on the front of my garage for over 6 years. It's on the second set of CFLs and when those go it will get LED bulbs. Works great, but I don't have kids bouncing basketballs on it either.
One more thought Brenda. Replacing a light fixture is just a little more difficult than replacing a light bulb. I get it that electricity can be intimidating and you want someone else to take the risk. So, why not have the installer select the fixture that they recommend? You won't have to worry about low ratings on Google and you can make an arrangement with the installer for what happens if the fixture doesn't last the expected time.
