Depends on the variety of clematis. General rule is if it flowers before June do not prune. Anything that flowers after June you can prune in spring - do it on St Valentines Day and you won't forget!

I don't cut mine back , in the spring i take a broom or my hands and knock most of the dried brown leaves off.
