Why not just trim it back to the size you want?
Take a few pics for prosperity, then rip the sucker out! Good luck with the stump...may need to get a chainsaw to break it up, or you could cut it higher up from ground level, seal with polyurethane, and use it as a quiet seating are for one...
Is it the type of plant you could break up and give some to a friend or family member? I like to plant stuff like this (mint, bee balm, lemon balm, chives), also, but I always plant it in a big pot or away from everything else. That gives it enough room to grow but it is separated from the rest of the garden.
