Arrange your furniture so when you walk in the room you have an eye catcher center, what you want the eyes to first catch. Then arrange it to leave walk areas clear, don't block popular walk through space with furniture. Finally, arrange small group clusters together so people feel close and comfortable to one another.
my favorite trick is to note the size of the room on graph paper.. 1 square per foot... note all windows, doorways. Then measure the furniture graph it out on another paper,,,cut out the shapes. It's a lot easier to move an inch wide paper piece from place to place than the recliner.
The easiest answer is to decide what purpose each room has and decorate it for that. If a large room will be a family room, dining room and study, then break up the room into smaller "centers" and decorate it as 3 separate areas. The most important thing to remember is that you should buy and arrange furniture so the room has function and purpose first. Then add accessories to personalize and "cozy up" the space. You don't need everything to match (that is so boring!) and you don't need to buy everything all at once (that is so expensive!)
Not sure what your question is but photo or drawings of your room would be helpful to assist you with furniture arrangement.
