If it has paint or stain on it already , you have to remove that first, then use a semi transparent stain this will give you both a rich color finish plus show the beautiful oak grains.

You don't tell us what your project is so that may indicate some options. But I might suggest using water based stain (Minwax has it in many colors as do other brands.) Follow instructions on product then follow up with water based polyurethane. You'll get grain showing through and color. (The key to seeing color and grain is to apply the stain then wipe off. You'll see both grain and color.)

Stains show the grain. You can pick from dozens of colors at the local hardware store or pick an oak stain or natural color that will let the grain show through.

Years ago we redid our kitchen cupboards in another house. They were great cupboards but had gotten real dark over time. We removed all the stain and finish. We liked the color left on the cupboards so much that we just cleaned them up and put a few coats of polyurethane on it and left the color as is. It looked great in the small kitchen and made it so much brighter!

Hi Louise. You can use a paint and add water to it to make it almost like a stain. They also have colored stains available. You will apply and then wipe it off with the grain. If you want more color keep reapplying.

Hello thank you for your speedy answers and good advice. What I neglected to say is that I'm refinishing an oak table that I would like to place in the veranda, which is screened. The table will never be near the screen, but would still need to be finished in a way to be protected from Winnipeg's (Canada) extreme temperatures.
