Start by going to a Homedepot or Lowe's, and look at the different kinds of drop ceiling tiles. This is a simple job to replace the tiles, or hire a contractor to put them up for you. EJL.
we painted our basement ceiling a dark gray then attached white vinyl lattice over it so it has the illusion of being higher than the ceiling really is - you would have to remove the drop ceiling and the vinyl siding never needs painting or maintenance and if you have a leak (hopefully never) it won't hurt it.
You could keep the grid for the drop ceiling. Paint the grid and then use one of the old tiles as a template to make tiles from pallet wood. That way you could still remove the panels if you needed to get at the wiring or plumbing. Just make sure that the ones you would make wouldn't be heavier than the old tiles.
