If you are planting now, make sure to replace some of the soil that will be surrounding it with good potting soil. The better stuff, like miracle grow comes with sustained release fertilizer in it. Look up mums to see if they need a particular type of extra amending. I would suggest gardingknowhow.com as an excellent site for any type of plant you want to check out. I don't know about mums as I don't get enough sun to sustain them in my yard.

good old compose is the best fertilizer there is. in spring cut them almost to the ground and add more compost in the fall they should be mounded and beautiful again.
