You can plant dogwood, oak, american elm. Those should all survive near walnut trees.
Don't plant pine trees, they drop millions of cones, tassels, they don't grow straight, and best of all their roots come up out of the ground around the tree, and ruin the lawn
Nothing grows around walnuts, their roots are like toxic to other plants
