You must use good potting soil. Put gravel in first to help with drainage. Make sure you have enough soil on top of the gravel to promote healthy root growth for the size of the mature plants. Use a good fertilizer as directed because the planter will take the same care as potted plants and watering depletes the soil faster than when planted in the ground. Same goes for watering. Since you are using painted tires you could have some heat buildup from the black rubber, especially in the heat of the day, so watch the moisture level carefully so they don't overheat the roots. Don't plant anything that you would eat due to the chemicals in the rubber, stick with flowers. Hope this helps! Need more help? Just ask us!
landscape fabric on the bottom to keep weeds out and a really good garden or potting soil such as Miracle Grow.... holes drilled in the bottom side wall will help keep water from puddling and be sure to pack the soil into the sides really well (no air pockets) Put a piece of rabbit wire under the whole tire if you have ground squirrels or gophers that dig in)
