They usually give you a template in the package. Make sure you mark where you want it to go and make sure it is level. They make plastic anchors that you screw into the wall and then put your screw in that.'
Most towel bars you purchase have the mounting brackets and instructions included. If you're trying to install an old one I would suggest using plastic wall anchors. Don't forget to use a level!

If possible, try to screw at least one side into a stud. If not the others offered great suggestions.
