Could be the type of tomato he had. Try Rutger's Big Boys, or Beefsteak. Go for heirloom seeds. Today's tomatos have be bred to have tougher skins to be machine picked. It's like they bred the taste out of them.
There are so many kinds of tomatoes! Try growing several varieties to find out what does best in your growing spot. Ask for help where you buy your plants. Read the labels on the plants for growing information or on the seed packet. Do you like a high acid tomato or do you prefer something on the sweet side? I'm sure with all the different tomatoes, you can find something that reminds you of your fathers tomatoes. Or maybe even something you like better!
