You could put molding 6. inches wide attached to the ceiling to split the room up, and put molding down each side

I would be tempted to put a wide moulding right up to the fire place (the same height as the piece with the vertical grooves) and stop there...you could put a vertical piece to separate the 'rooms' but I'm not sure that will enhance the space
They make end caps for crown molding trim just for that purpose. They sell it at the home improvement stores.
Whatever you decide make sure the bottom molding is heavier to anchor the room. When the top is heavier the whole room looks top heavy.
